An eerily enchanting medley that is rampant with the plucking of stringed instruments, “Face Farm Again” seems to me like the perfect background music for a scene in which the hero of the movie wanders aimlessly around in a gloomy drizzle, a solitary figure amidst the anxious bustle of downtown Manhattan. When I listen to this song, I imagine an awkward and naive but kind farm boy who has been uprooted from the country to the city, and is having difficulties finding an identity for himself – hence the title. The song itself is minimal and acoustic; there is only one singer throughout, and no more than three instruments accompany his voice at a time (a lonely trio of guitar, mandolin, and banjo). For the most part, each instrument plays the same melody during the entire song, and they are blended together in a quietly persistent composition. At the beginning, the dynamics are fairly balanced, with the vocals and instrumentals at about the same volume. However, as the song continues, the musical perspective is shifted so that the focus is more on the instruments rather than the singing; the lyrics reflect this as well – they become more simplistic as the song goes on, until the last portion is merely soft whispers of “face… farm… again.”
